Elizabeth Anderson is the Max Shaye Professor of Public Philosophy and John Dewey Distinguished University Professor at the University of Michigan's Department of Philosophy. She holds cross-appointments in Women's Studies and directs the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Program. Her work bridges moral, political philosophy, feminist theory, and social epistemology, with a focus on equality, workplace democracy, and the ethical limits of markets. Anderson critiques neoliberalism's impact on labor and advocates for democratic reforms in institutions.
Education: Ph.D. (1987), A.M. (1984) in Philosophy from Harvard University; B.A. (1981) in Philosophy with Economics minor from Swarthmore College.
Research Interests: Democratic theory, racial integration, feminist epistemology, and the philosophy of work. Her books include Hijacked, Private Government, and The Imperative of Integration, which won the APA's Gittler Award.
Awards: MacArthur Fellow, American Academy of Arts and Sciences Fellow, British Academy Fellow.
Grants/Advising: Designs interdisciplinary programs and advises on egalitarianism projects. Her recent work examines historical egalitarian movements and workplace power dynamics.
