Elisabeth Kooi is a Professor at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Groningen, affiliated with the Reproductive Origins of Adult Health and Disease (ROAHD) research group. She held an external position as Consultant Neonatologist at Cork University Maternity Hospital (University College Cork) from August 2017 to July 2018. Her research focuses on neonatal care, preterm infant health, and medical decision-making processes, particularly in critical conditions like necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). She explores applications of artificial intelligence in clinical decisions and investigates neurodevelopmental outcomes in premature infants.
Key research areas include cerebral autoregulation in preterm brain injury, parental decision-making in end-of-life scenarios for surgical NEC, and placental pathology effects on infant neurological functioning. She has published over 127 peer-reviewed articles, including high-impact studies in Pediatric Research, Medical Decision Making, and Early Human Development.
Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to good health and well-being (SDG 3). She actively supervises PhD students and has editorial roles, including as Guest Editor for Children-Basel. Notable activities include media contributions discussing AI's role in improving neonatal care and innovations like oxygen sensors for preterm infants.
