Elisabeth Elder is a Clinical Professor at the University of Sydney and a specialist breast surgeon at the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute. She holds an academic position within the Westmead Clinical School, part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health. Her clinical expertise focuses on oncoplastic and reconstructive surgery, complemented by extensive research in breast cancer outcomes, lymphedema prevention, and digital health applications in survivorship care.
Dr. Elder graduated from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden (1992), completed general surgery training there, and earned a PhD in tumor biology in 2002. She has held leadership roles in professional bodies like the Australasian Society for Breast Disease and chairs the oncoplastic surgery committee for Breast Surgeons in Australia and New Zealand.
Her research spans reconstructive surgical techniques, electronic health interventions, exercise oncology, and patient-reported outcomes for breast device monitoring. Collaborations include projects with Monash University, Macquarie University, and the Karolinska Institute. Key areas of interest also include sleep biology interactions with cancer development and molecular signature research.
Dr. Elder’s work includes clinical trials such as the Bella Seno International Multicentre Trial (local PI) and contributions to the Australian Breast Device Registry. She actively participates in surgical training, medical education, and patient advocacy groups.
Grants include a 2023 World Cancer Research Fund project on physical activity support for breast cancer survivors and a 2017 study on sleep apnea in cancer cohorts. She is affiliated with BCAL Diagnostics and contributes to global breast implant registry initiatives.
