Elisabeth Bekers is a Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Literary Studies at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). She holds affiliations with multiple research centers, including the Centre for Literary and Intermedial Crossings, Brussels Interdisciplinary Research centre on Migration and Minorities, and the Centre of Expertise on Gender, Diversity and Intersectionality. Her research focuses on postcolonial and African literatures, Black British and African-American literature, and gender studies, with a particular emphasis on themes like female genital excision, migrant narratives, and cultural identity.
Her academic career includes supervising numerous theses, such as Kayra Maes' work on Black British children's literature and Katrijn Van den Bossche’s project on marginalized literary forms. She has led or contributed to over 14 research projects, including studies on compassionate communities and avant-garde fiction. Her work has been recognized with awards such as the 'Black Europe in Brussels' grant (2021).
Bekers is an active contributor to academic discourse, with 124+ publications across journals, edited volumes, and special issues. Her recent articles explore intermediality, neo-avant-garde literature, and Black European comparative studies. She has also engaged in public lectures, media commentary, and interdisciplinary collaborations, reflecting her commitment to bridging academic and societal concerns.
