Elisa Panzarini is an Associate Professor in Comparative Anatomy and Cytology (SSD BIO06) at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Technologies (Di.S.Te.BA) at the University of Salento. She serves as Scientific Director of the Comparative Anatomy and Cytology Laboratory and is an active member of the Doctoral College in Biological and Environmental Sciences and Technologies. Dr. Panzarini teaches Cytology, Histology and Embryology for the Bachelor's Degree in Biotechnology and Developmental Biology for the Master's Degree in Medical Biotechnology and Nanobiotechnology.
Her research focuses on three main areas: (1) Intercellular communication through extracellular vesicles under physiological and pathological conditions, with applications in diagnostics and therapeutics; (2) Interaction of engineered nanomaterials with living systems for drug delivery; and (3) Mechanisms of cell death and clearance of dead cells. Her work has significant implications for cancer research, regenerative medicine, and nanomedicine.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on extracellular vesicles, particularly exosomes and microvesicles, as diagnostic and therapeutic tools in cancer (especially glioblastoma), diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases. Her research integrates nanotechnology with cell biology to develop innovative diagnostic approaches and targeted therapies. The interdisciplinary nature of her work spans cancer biology, immunology, nanomedicine, and regenerative medicine.
Dr. Panzarini actively supervises graduate students and has served as co-supervisor for numerous theses across various biotechnology and biological sciences programs. She has secured significant research funding through multiple national and international projects including PON-AIM, PON-NEMESI, Future in Research, Marie Curie ITN-FP7, COST ACTION, RDH-IRPT, POR PUGLIA, PRIN, and COFIN projects.
She leads the Comparative Anatomy and Cytology Laboratory at the Ecotekne Center and serves as the contact person for Erasmus agreements with the University of Cadiz and the University of Cordoba. As a member of the Reviewer Board for the journal Pharmaceutics and various scientific societies, she contributes significantly to the scientific community through peer review and academic service.
