Elinor Andrén is a Professor at Södertörn University, working in the Department of Natural Sciences, Environment and Technology within the School of Natural Sciences, Technology and Environmental Studies. She specializes in paleoecology, using fossil diatoms to reconstruct environmental and climate changes throughout history. Since 2004, she has been teaching geosciences in the Environment and Development program at the university.
Her research focuses on paleoecology, particularly studying how the Baltic Sea environment has changed over millennia. She uses fossil diatoms preserved in lake and ocean sediments in combination with geochemical analyses, sediment analyses, and various dating methods to identify and interpret historical changes in salinity, climate, pH, nutrients, and shoreline displacement. Her work examines both natural climate variations and human impacts on the marine environment.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on the Baltic Sea's paleoenvironment, particularly examining how climate variations and human activities have affected the sea's ecosystem over the past several thousand years. Her research often employs diatom analysis as a key methodology, combined with other proxy indicators, to reconstruct historical environmental conditions. A recurring theme is understanding the natural variability of the Baltic Sea ecosystem to better assess current anthropogenic impacts, particularly regarding hypoxia, eutrophication, and salinity changes.
Professor Andrén actively supervises doctoral students, with Lena Norbäck Ivarsson successfully defending her thesis in 2020 and Olena Vinogradova working on her dissertation within the SEASIDE project. She participates in multiple significant research projects including UPPBASER (Understanding Past and Present Baltic Sea Ecosystem Response), SEASIDE (a multidisciplinary study of maritime environmental history), and the Late Pleistocene and Holocene climate forcing on the Baltic Sea project. She also participated in IODP Expedition 347 Baltic Sea Paleoenvironment with researchers from 12 different countries, studying sediment archives from the Landsort Deep.
