Elia Beniash is Professor and Chair of Oral and Craniofacial Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, with joint appointments in Bioengineering. His NIH and NSF-funded research explores biomineralization mechanisms in biological systems and applies these principles to develop bio-inspired nanomaterials for tissue regeneration.
His work focuses on hierarchical organization of mineralized tissues, structure-function relationships in protein assemblies, and regenerative strategies for dental and skeletal tissues. Key investigations include enamel matrix protein functions, phosphate signaling in mineralization, and collagen-mimetic scaffolds.
He directs an interdisciplinary research team that integrates materials science, cell biology, and advanced imaging techniques to understand mineralization processes.
