Eli Lara is an Associate Professor of Cello at the University of Missouri School of Music, part of the College of Arts and Science. She holds a DMA from The Juilliard School, an MM from Yale School of Music, and a BA in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University. Her research focuses on classical and contemporary music performance, including studies of Erwin Schulhoff’s string quartet manuscripts in Prague and Vienna. She is a member of the Esterhazy String Quartet and Khemia Ensemble, specializing in contemporary and multimedia performances.
Dr. Lara’s career includes performances across North America, Europe, Asia, and South America, with highlights at venues like New York’s Alice Tully Hall and London’s Wigmore Hall. She co-founded Trio Séléné, whose 2018 album on Summit Records features works by Fauré, Zemlinsky, and Fernando Buide. She actively promotes contemporary music through premieres at festivals such as Mizzou International Composers Festival and National Sawdust.
Awarded the Richard F. French Prize for her Schulhoff research and a C.V. Starr Doctoral Fellowship, Lara has taught at the University of Missouri and Austin Peay State University. Her performance credits include roles with the Gateway Chamber Orchestra, Nashville Opera Orchestra, and KC Lyric Opera, alongside studio recordings for artists like Willie Nelson and video game soundtracks for EA and Oculus Rift.
Lara’s professional affiliations include the Odyssey Chamber Music Series and Birdfoot, Kneisel Hall, and Sarasota festivals. She balances academic leadership, ensemble performance, and interdisciplinary collaborations in music and multimedia.
