Elena Velasco (she/ella) serves as Associate Professor and Theatre Production Coordinator in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Bowie State University's College of Arts & Sciences. With over 25 years of professional experience, she maintains an active dual career in academia and professional theater while leading Convergence Theatre as Founding Artistic Director.
Her research focuses on Theatre for Social Justice, Physical Theatre, and Bilingual Youth Theatre, exploring how performance can advance equity and community engagement. Her work centers Latiné representation, decolonial practices, and mind-body integration in performance, with particular emphasis on creating spaces for marginalized voices through devised and verbatim theater techniques.
Her publications and productions reveal consistent themes in social justice theater, bilingual education methodologies, and representation studies. Her recent work examines Black femme vision in musical theater and develops frameworks for EDIA implementation in theater organizations.

Velasco advises the Student Executive Producers Board at Bowie State and serves on multiple professional boards including Educational Theatre Company and the American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE), where she chairs the Professional Theatre Network. Her community work includes directing socially engaged productions with organizations like Convergence Theatre and serving as a cultural consultant for theater organizations nationwide. She also maintains an active yoga practice as a 200-hr RYT, integrating wellness principles into her performance pedagogy.
