Elena Sitnikova is a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southampton. She holds a PhD from the University of Aberdeen (2010), an MSc, and a bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics from Saint Petersburg State University, Russia. Prior to her current role, she held postdoctoral positions at the University of Liverpool (2011–2013) and the University of Nottingham (until 2025). Her research focuses on computational tools for advanced materials, particularly composite materials, and their mechanical behavior under extreme conditions. Key contributions include co-authoring the monograph *Representative Volume Elements and Unit Cells* and developing the UnitCells© software for material characterization.
Her current research extends design methodologies for 3D woven composites to functional materials and involves creating a generalized framework for dynamic failure analysis in anisotropic materials. She is also a key contributor to the TALON tool, aiding design of fiber-reinforced tubular structures. Elena accepts PhD students and is actively involved in collaborative research projects.
Her work bridges computational mechanics, material science, and engineering design, with applications in aerospace, automotive, and structural materials sectors.
