Elena Maris is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). She previously served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Microsoft Research’s Social Media Collective and Microsoft Research-New England. She holds a Ph.D. in Communication from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research explores the intersections of media/tech industries and their audiences, focusing on how technology shapes mutual understanding and influence between users and platforms. She also investigates identity formation through popular culture, technology, and the internet, with a focus on marginalized groups like LGBTQ+ communities.
Maris’s work has been published in journals such as New Media & Society, European Journal of Cultural Studies, and Feminist Media Studies, and has been featured in mainstream outlets like The New York Times and Wired. Her expertise spans critical data studies, tech policy, platform politics, and audience measurement. She advises organizations such as The Sundance Institute, Xbox, and the National Endowment for the Arts on matters related to user/industry relations and digital communities.
Her research highlights themes like algorithmic systems, platform governance, and identity in digital spaces. Notable projects include analyses of TikTok’s algorithmic mutual aid, fan cultures, and the ethical implications of data tracking in platforms. She advocates for equitable tech policies and critical engagement with emerging technologies.
