Elena Marchiori

Elena Marchiori is a Professor of Machine Learning and Head of the Data Science Group within the Institute for Computing and Information Sciences (iCIS) at Radboud University, Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Her leadership extends to major interdisciplinary projects including MOCIA (Maintaining Optimal Cognitive function In Ageing) and MARBLE (sMARt Breast cancer detection with deep LEarning).

Her research focuses on machine learning, particularly deep learning and transfer learning, with applications in biomedical sciences. Key areas include:

• Developing AI algorithms for non-invasive markers of cognitive decline and personalized interventions (MOCIA project).
• Improving breast cancer screening through machine learning on multi-modal medical images (MARBLE project).

Professor Marchiori mentors PhD students such as Wieske de Swart (MOCIA) and Yao Tong (MARBLE). She secures significant funding, including:

• MOCIA: A €9.17 million project (6.25 million from NWO) involving eight knowledge institutes and eight co-financing parties, targeting cognitive decline in the elderly.
• MARBLE: An EU EFRO Oost-Nederland funded project developing AI for breast cancer detection in collaboration with Screenpoint Medical and RUMC.

The Data Science Group under her leadership fosters collaborations across disciplines, integrating computer science with medical research to address critical health challenges.
