Dr Elena García-Martín is a Principal Investigator in Phytoplankton Dynamics at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), UK. Her research focuses on microbial plankton ecology, particularly the role of bacteria, phytoplankton, and zooplankton in marine carbon cycling. She investigates metabolic processes, environmental influences (e.g., temperature, dissolved organic matter), and plankton community dynamics through fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and collaborative projects.
Career Highlights:
- 2019–present: Principal Investigator, NOC, UK
- 2017–2019: Senior Postdoctoral Research Assistant, University of East Anglia
- PhD in Marine Science and Ecology (2013, University of Vigo, Spain)
Fieldwork Experience: Over 40 weeks at sea, including cruises in the North Atlantic, Celtic Sea, and Antarctic regions (e.g., Bio-Carbon 2024, Atlantic Meridional Transect 2010–2011).
Current Projects:
- Coordinator of the Arctic component of the NERC-funded BIOPOLE programme (2022–2027).
- Leading the PARTITRICS project under BIO-CARBON to study particle respiration and carbon storage.
Teaching & Service: NOC Ethics and Integrity representative, member of the UKRI Peer Review College, and former roles in committees (e.g., Health and Safety, Symposium organization).
