Eleftherios T. Papoutsakis is the Unidel Eugene du Pont Chair Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Delaware, with a joint appointment in Biological Sciences. He holds prestigious fellowships from multiple professional societies and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. His research focuses on synthetic biology, microbial systems engineering, and extracellular vesicle-based therapies.
Education:
- Doctorate, Purdue University (1980)
- Masters, Purdue University (1977)
- Bachelors, National Technical University of Athens (1974)
Research Interests:
- Engineering microbial consortia for sustainable CO2 fixation and biofuel production
- Developing extracellular vesicle platforms for targeted cell and gene therapies
- Optimizing perfusion bioreactors for protein therapeutics manufacturing
Publications reflect a dual focus on microbial systems and extracellular vesicle applications, with recent work exploring syntrophic Clostridium cocultures and megakaryocytic microparticle drug delivery mechanisms. His work intersects metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, and translational medicine.
Awards include the William Walker Award (AIChE 2022), Charles Thom Award (SIMB 2022), and ACS Murphree Award (2017). He has filed over 20 patents, including methods for Clostridium genetic engineering and therapeutic vesicle technologies.
Papoutsakis has advised over 130 graduate students/postdocs, with notable collaborations on FDA-supported biomanufacturing projects and synthetic methylotrophy platforms. His lab explores cutting-edge applications of microbial systems and cellular vesicles in industrial and medical contexts.
