Electra Gizeli

Dr. Electra Gizeli is a Professor at the University of Crete and a Research Professor at IMBB-FORTH. She studied at Athens University (BSc in Chemistry), UCL (MSc), and the University of Cambridge (PhD). She has established a multidisciplinary lab at IMBB-FORTH, pioneering acoustic biosensors and molecular diagnostics, and has co-founded two spin-off companies focused on diagnostic platforms.

Research Interests

Dr. Gizeli's work spans biosensors, molecular diagnostics, nanobiotechnology, and biomedical engineering. Her lab specializes in biophysical acoustic characterization of bio-molecular interactions and developing diagnostic tools for healthcare and agro/food safety. She integrates basic and applied research, with a focus on point-of-care detection of infectious diseases.

She co-founded two diagnostic-focused spin-offs and established the IMBB Mentoring Scheme. Her group has led hospital evaluation studies in Europe and Africa, and she uses IP revenue to support diagnostics research in Africa. She actively disseminates science through open events.
