Eleanor Howell is a Professor at Auburn University's College of Nursing, having returned to the faculty in 2017 after 20 years in academic leadership positions. She initially joined Auburn in 1994 as an associate professor and coordinator of special projects, managing faculty practice contracts and teaching in BSN and MSN programs. Prior to Auburn, she taught at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in graduate nursing administration, adult health, and trauma programs.
Her educational background includes:
- Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (1993)
- Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (1981)
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Augusta University (1978)
Dr. Howell's research centers on health services administration and policy, with specific expertise in policy evaluation, design/delivery of health services, and quality improvement. She teaches graduate courses in evidence-based practice, policy, and quality/safety management, emphasizing evidence-based approaches to healthcare delivery and community/public health nursing.
She secured the Nurse Faculty Loan Program Partnerships grant ($61,117.00) to address nursing faculty shortages. Professionally, she serves as a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) team leader and evaluator, and previously evaluated for the Higher Learning Commission. Her international work includes curriculum reform in China, nursing seminars in the UK, and physician management training in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia.
