Elaine Hsieh is Professor and Chair of Communication Studies at the University of Minnesota, with affiliate appointments in Law and Bioethics. Her research focuses on intercultural health communication, bilingual healthcare delivery, and medical interpreter-mediated interactions. She leads NIH-funded projects examining language equity in clinical settings and has received numerous awards including a Fulbright Scholarship and Distinguished Book Award from the National Communication Association.
Her research explores provider-patient communication dynamics in language-discordant settings, cultural frameworks for health communication, and trauma narratives in refugee populations. Recent projects include developing best practices for informal interpreters in neonatal intensive care units.
