Elaine Chang is an Associate Professor in the School of Theatre, English, and Creative Writing at the University of Guelph’s College of Arts. Her work bridges literary studies, film/media analysis, and cultural theory with a focus on race, gender, and postcolonial frameworks. She earned her BA from the University of British Columbia and MA/PhD from Stanford University in Modern Thought and Literature.
Research interests include intersectional studies of race/ethnicity/gender, 20th/21st century anglophone fiction, Asian North American cultural studies, and film/media cultures. She has published books like Reel Asian and Decentre, contributed to major literary companions, and developed award-winning screenplays.
Awards include SSHRC grants, a Mellon Foundation award, and recognition for teaching excellence. Her creative work includes experimental film direction and screenplay development, with funding from Telefilm Canada and the Ontario Arts Council. She actively participates in academic committees like the MLA’s Division on Women’s Studies and has spoken on panels addressing anti-Asian racism in media.
