Elaine Allard is an Associate Professor of Educational Studies and inaugural Director of the Teaching & Learning Commons at Swarthmore College. Her research focuses on immigrant and emergent bilingual education, particularly the impact of undocumented status on students’ educational experiences. She holds affiliations with Latin American and Latino Studies, Linguistics, and Sanctuary initiatives at Swarthmore. She earned her Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. from Swarthmore College.
Her research interests include translanguaging pedagogies, language policy, and institutional support for marginalized student populations. Courses taught span qualitative research methods, education policy, and bilingual teaching strategies. Over 15 years of collaborative research has examined sanctuary campus practices, late-arrival immigrant students, and language dynamics in K-12 and higher education settings.
Publications explore topics ranging from translanguaging classroom practices to the lived experiences of undocumented students. Her work bridges academic research with practical teacher training, emphasizing equitable pedagogical approaches for linguistically diverse learners.
