Eileen Gentleman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Lausanne (UNIL), Faculty of Biology and Medicine, a position she has held since October 1, 2023. Her research integrates stem cell biology and materials science to develop synthetic hydrogels for regenerative medicine and disease modeling.
Her research focuses on designing fully defined artificial extracellular matrices with tunable physical and biological properties. These synthetic hydrogels enable the encapsulation of living cells and organoids, modulation of extracellular cues such as stiffness and protein density, and compatibility with standard imaging and omics techniques. By combining these materials with human iPSC-derived intestinal organoids, her team investigates human diseases and has developed advanced biophysical and FRET-based methods to quantify 3D matrix remodeling around organoids.
Eileen Gentleman's work represents a cutting-edge convergence of bioengineering and stem cell technology, aiming to advance tissue engineering and personalized disease models. Her recent transition from King's College London, where she held progressive academic roles including Reader and Professor of Bioengineering, underscores her leadership in the field.
She has received significant recognition through competitive fellowships such as the Wellcome Trust Research Career Development Fellowship, highlighting her academic excellence and research impact.
- PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Tulane University, New Orleans, USA (2005)
Throughout her career, Eileen Gentleman has secured prestigious research positions and fellowships, demonstrating sustained success in academic research. She led independent research as a Research Career Development Fellow at King's College London and advanced through Senior Research Fellow to Reader and Professor in Bioengineering. Her dual appointment as Academic Impact Manager reflects her engagement in translating research into real-world applications. She is actively mentoring and building research capacity at UNIL.
She conducts her research in a laboratory environment focused on interdisciplinary collaboration between bioengineers, cell biologists, and materials scientists, aiming to bridge fundamental science with clinical applications in regenerative medicine.
