Prof. Eiko Kuramae is a Professor by Special Appointment at Utrecht University's Faculty of Science, Department of Environmental Biology. She holds a dual role as Senior Scientist and Project Leader at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW). Her work bridges microbial ecology and environmental genomics, focusing on soil microbiome interactions, nutrient cycling, and sustainable agriculture. Key research themes include crop domestication impacts, rhizosphere microbiome dynamics, and climate change mitigation through microbial solutions.
- Expertise: Microbial community ecology, soil functioning, nitrogen/phosphorus cycles, agroecosystems
- International collaborations: Brazil, Uruguay, China, Africa
Dr. Kuramae leads projects applying omics approaches and bioinformatics to study microbial interactions in agroforestry and biomass production systems. Recent work highlights the role of microbiomes in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing soil fertility through microbial inoculants and biofertilizers.
Publications (2020-2023): Over 75 peer-reviewed articles on topics like rice domestication effects, soil microbiome functions, and microbial biostimulants. Notable contributions include studies on strigolactones' role in root microbiome recruitment and phosphate-solubilizing microbial selection.
