Efren Gonzalez

Efren Gonzalez, MD is Director of the Ocular Oncology Center and Director of the Pediatric Retina Program at Boston Children's Hospital. He serves as an Instructor at Harvard Medical School, specializing in pediatric and adult vitreoretinal surgery, ocular oncology, and pediatric ophthalmology. Dr. Gonzalez is one of the few ophthalmologists worldwide with triple fellowship training in these specialized areas, providing comprehensive care for complex eye conditions affecting children.

Dr. Gonzalez received his MD with honors from Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico (2002). He completed two ophthalmology residencies (Hospital Universitario, 2008; Boston Medical Center, 2017) and three clinical fellowships in Vitreoretinal Surgery (Valley Retina Institute, 2010), Ocular Oncology (Princess Margaret Hospital/Hospital for Sick Kids/University of Toronto, 2011), and Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (Boston Children's Hospital, 2014).

His research focuses on pediatric macular diseases, nerve growth factor applications, and advanced ocular imaging techniques. Dr. Gonzalez has published extensively on retinoblastoma treatment, optical coherence tomography applications, and surgical training methodologies. His recent work explores innovative approaches to pediatric eye diseases, including NGF therapies and improved diagnostic imaging for ocular tumors.

As an expert for Boston Children's Hospital Precision Medicine Service, Dr. Gonzalez contributes to personalized treatment approaches for complex pediatric eye conditions. His clinical expertise spans retinoblastoma, retinopathy of prematurity, optic nerve gliomas, and various genetic eye disorders including neurofibromatosis and tuberous sclerosis complex.
