Eero P. Simoncelli is a Silver Professor at New York University, holding appointments across multiple departments including Neural Science, Mathematics, Data Science, and Psychology. He serves as Scientific Director at the Center for Computational Neuroscience within the FlatIron Institute, part of the Simons Foundation. His research focuses on computational neuroscience, visual representation in biological and artificial systems, and statistical signal and image processing.
- Key research themes include optimal encoding of visual information, experimental characterization of neural responses, and Bayesian inference models for perception.
- Recent work examines adaptive coding, neural population dynamics, and applications of statistical models to image processing and compression.
Award highlights include:
- 2019 Elected Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
- Minerva Foundation Golden Brain Award (2017)
- IEEE Sustained Impact Paper Award (2016)
- NYU Silver Professorship (2015–present)
- NSF CAREER grant (1996) and Sloan Fellowship (1998)
He leads the Laboratory for Computational Vision at NYU, collaborating extensively with the Movshon lab and other computational neuroscience groups. His lab develops theoretical frameworks for understanding how sensory systems process information, with applications to computer vision and biomedical imaging.
