Professor Eelco T.C. Vogt is a full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis at Utrecht University's Faculty of Science, where he also serves as Scientific Director of the Institute for Sustainability and Circular Chemistry. Appointed to a full professorship on August 1, 2020 (after previously holding an endowed chair), Vogt leads research at the intersection of catalysis science and sustainable chemical processes.
Dr. Vogt's research focuses on heterogeneous catalysis, particularly in refinery processes and zeolite-based catalysts, with a strong emphasis on sustainability transitions. His work bridges fundamental catalyst science with industrial applications, seeking to improve efficiency in existing petrochemical processes while developing pathways toward carbon-neutral alternatives. He is particularly interested in catalyst deactivation mechanisms, regeneration strategies, and the development of new catalytic materials for sustainable fuel production. His extensive publication record demonstrates leadership in understanding catalyst behavior at multiple scales, from single-particle analysis to industrial-scale applications.
Vogt's recent work has increasingly focused on sustainability challenges, examining how catalytic technologies can facilitate the transition away from fossil resources while maintaining process efficiency. His research group employs advanced imaging and analytical techniques to visualize catalyst behavior at unprecedented resolution, contributing significantly to the field of catalyst characterization.
- KNCV Catalysis Prize (awarded for his doctoral dissertation)
Before joining Utrecht University, Vogt had a distinguished 32-year career in industry, primarily with Akzo Nobel and Albemarle Corporation, where he held various R&D leadership positions including Global R&D Director of Catalysts. This industrial experience deeply informs his academic research, ensuring strong relevance to real-world catalytic challenges. He is actively involved in national catalysis strategy, having co-authored the Science and Technology Roadmap 'Catalysis - Key to a Sustainable Future' (2015) and served on the Dijkgraaf Committee that published 'Chemistry & Physics: Fundamental for our future' (2013).
