Dr. Edyta Regulska is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Geoecology, Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization of the Polish Academy of Sciences. She has been affiliated with the Institute since 2006, earning her PhD in Earth Sciences in Geography in 2012 after completing doctoral studies there from 2006-2011. Following a scientific internship at the Department of Geoecology and Climatology in early 2012, she has maintained her position as assistant professor while taking maternity and parental leave from September 2015 to September 2018.
Her educational background includes:
- Master's studies (1995-2000) at the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Protection, Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences, with a thesis on "The influence of conservation and conventional cultivation of sugar beet on the Lumbricidae community and their activity"
- Doctoral studies (2006-2011) at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization of the Polish Academy of Sciences, with a dissertation on "Zoological and landscape indicators and their usefulness for assessing the development of a sustainable rural landscape (based on the example of selected areas)"
Dr. Regulska's research focuses on the bioindicative role of animals in landscape assessment, particularly examining how land use changes affect agricultural landscapes. Her work bridges ecology, geography, and environmental science, with special emphasis on how soil organisms like earthworms and carabid beetles serve as indicators of landscape health and sustainability. She investigates the relationships between soil properties, landscape structure, and biodiversity across various spatial scales, from local agricultural fields to national forest ecosystems. Her methodology combines field ecology with spatial analysis to understand complex landscape transformations and ecosystem service provision.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on ecosystem services assessment across diverse landscapes, ranging from urban green spaces to riparian forests and afforested agricultural lands. A notable trend in her work is the integration of biological indicators with spatial planning applications, particularly examining how birch afforestation affects soil biodiversity and how urban green infrastructure can be optimized for climate regulation and air purification. Her research spans theoretical frameworks to practical applications in landscape management and spatial planning.
Her scientific achievements have been recognized with:
- Mazovian Doctoral Scholarship (2009)
- Distinction of the Rector of the University of Lodz for the book "Identity and Place. Awakening the Dormant Potential of the Village" (2018)
Dr. Regulska has been actively involved in numerous research projects related to ecosystem services assessment at national, regional, and local scales. Her collaborative work includes significant contributions to major publications on Polish forest ecosystem services and urban ecosystem service mapping. She has served as co-editor for conference proceedings including the IALE 2022 European Landscape Ecology Congress Book of Abstracts, demonstrating her leadership in the geographical and ecological research community.
Her laboratory and research team employ a combination of field sampling, laboratory analysis, and spatial modeling techniques to investigate how different land uses affect ecological processes across Polish landscapes. They maintain active collaborations with interdisciplinary research groups focusing on soil ecology, landscape transformations, and ecosystem service assessment, contributing to both theoretical advances and practical applications in sustainable landscape management.
