Edy E. Soffer, MD is Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, where he serves as Director of the GI Motility program at the Division of Gastroenterology. Board certified in Internal Medicine with a subspecialty in gastroenterology, Dr. Soffer is an active clinician and researcher with numerous publications in leading gastroenterology journals. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association and American Motility Society.
Dr. Soffer received his medical degree from Technion School of Medicine in Haifa, Israel. He completed internships at Soroka Medical Center in Beer-Sheva, Israel and at Coney Island Hospital in New York, where he also completed a residency in internal medicine. Dr. Soffer fulfilled a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in Memphis and research fellowships at the University of Iowa Hospital/Clinic in Iowa City and at London Hospital Medical College in England.
Dr. Soffer's primary research focuses on innovative treatments for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and gastroparesis, with particular expertise in electrical stimulation of the gastrointestinal tract. His work explores motor abnormalities of the gut, primarily affecting the esophagus, stomach, and small bowel. He has investigated novel surgical options for GERD, gastric electrical stimulation for obesity and gastroparesis, and diagnostic approaches for gastrointestinal motility disorders. His research has received funding from the American College of Gastroenterology, the BIRD Foundation, and several pharmaceutical companies.
Dr. Soffer's recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on electrical stimulation therapies for gastrointestinal disorders, particularly GERD and gastroparesis. His research spans from basic mechanisms of gastrointestinal motility to clinical applications of electroceutical approaches. He has contributed significantly to understanding methane production patterns in breath testing, gender-specific risk factors in reflux disease, and novel surgical techniques for gastrointestinal conditions.
