Edwina Brennan

Professor Edwina Brennan is an Associate Professor with expertise in biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology, and environmental sciences. She has been serving as a science lecturer and module coordinator since 2011 and holds a part-time lecturing position in biology at RCSI Bahrain since 2009.

Research Interests:

Her research spans several interconnected fields:

• Biotechnology & Molecular Biology: Focused on advancing biotechnological applications in medical and environmental contexts.
• Microbiology: Specializing in medical microbiology, particularly antimicrobial resistance and opportunistic pathogens.
• Environmental Sciences: Investigating microbial interactions within environmental systems.

Research Publications:

Her recent work includes studies on 5-ALA as a photosensitising agent for antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation of fungi, bridging microbiology and biotechnology applications. Additionally, she has explored educational methodologies for English language learners in science education.

She actively supervises summer research students in areas including medical microbiology, molecular biology, and protein purification. Her research has been supported by external funding from SBI pharma.

Teaching Experience:

Throughout her career, she has held various teaching positions including tutoring in chemistry and physics (2006-2009) and lecturing in analytical techniques (2007-2008) at the Institute of Technology Carlow.
