Edwin Mutyenyoka is a PhD researcher at the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS), University of Osnabrück, Germany. He holds a Master of Arts in Development Studies from the University of Limpopo, South Africa. His research focuses on the intersection of international migration and social protection mechanisms, particularly analyzing how formal and informal systems interact during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic.
His doctoral work investigates social protection frameworks among low-income immigrants in Alexandra Park, South Africa, emphasizing the rural-urban divide and the impact of policies on sustainable poverty alleviation. His research bridges migration studies, development policy, and urban sociology, addressing socioeconomic disparities and policy design.
Mutyenyoka’s published work explores the effects of social grants on poverty reduction and the dichotomies between chronic and episodic poverty in rural-urban contexts. His findings contribute to understanding the complexities of social protection systems and their implications for development strategies in post-apartheid South Africa.
He is supervised by Prof. Dr. Helen Schwenken at IMIS. For collaboration, he can be reached at edmutyenyoka@uni-osnabrueck.de.
