Edwin A. Schauble is a Professor of Geochemistry and Astrobiology in the Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His research focuses on atomic-level chemical properties of natural materials, equilibrium isotope fractionation, and applications to planetary environments.
- Developed theoretical frameworks for stable-isotope fractionation in geological and planetary contexts
- Contributed to clumped isotope thermometry and atmospheric methane cycle analysis
- Established quantum-mechanical models for vibrational frequencies in minerals and molecules
Notable collaborations include work on planetary core formation with Shahar and Fei (Science 2016), atmospheric methane dynamics with Young and Yeung (Science Advances 2017), and high-temperature isotope studies with Young (Annual Review 2016). His research has been supported by multiple NSF grants and NASA Astrobiology Institute funding.
Recent publications (2023-2024) include studies on lanthanide isotope fractionation, calcium isotopes in granite petrogenesis, and cerium isotope effects. Earlier work (2003-2010) established foundational models for iron, chlorine, and chromium isotope systems.
Scientific Awards:
- Hisashi Kuno Award (AGU, 2009)
- Richard H. Jahns Teaching Award (2001-2002)
- AGU Outstanding Student Paper Award (2000)
He has served as Department Chair (2019-2022) and Associate Editor for Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta (2009-2019), with extensive editorial contributions to chemical geology and geochemical society publications.
