Dr. Edward Snell is a Professor in the Department of Materials Design and Innovation at the University at Buffalo (SUNY) and an affiliated faculty member in the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. He holds an adjunct position in the Cell Stress and Biophysical Oncology program at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. As Chief Scientific Officer of the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, he oversees structural biology initiatives and directs the NSF BioXFEL Science and Technology Center. His research focuses on protein structure-function relationships, X-ray crystallography, and AI-driven analysis of radiation effects on biological systems.
Dr. Snell earned a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Manchester (1996) and a BS in Physics from the University of Liverpool (1992). His career includes leadership roles such as CEO of Hauptman-Woodward (2014–2023) and Senior Research Scientist positions at NASA-affiliated institutions. He has authored over 90 publications, four book chapters, and two books, with a focus on crystallization methods, radiation damage mitigation, and structural biology applications.
Research interests span crystallography, neutron scattering, and AI integration in structural analysis. Key projects include optimizing microgravity crystallization, studying low-dose radiation impacts, and developing high-throughput screening pipelines. His work on SARS-CoV-2 main protease structures contributed to drug design efforts during the pandemic.
Dr. Snell is a Fellow of the American Crystallographic Association and serves on the IUCr Book Series Committee. Awards include the Marshall Space Flight Center Director's Commendation (2003) and the Advanced Imaging Award (2003). He leads interdisciplinary teams at BioXFEL, advancing X-ray free-electron laser applications in biology.
