Professor Edward Simpson serves as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Lancaster University. Previously, he was Head of College at SOAS University of London and has held academic positions at Goldsmiths College and London School of Economics. As an anthropologist, Simpson has conducted extensive research in western India and has developed more recent interests in infrastructure and environmental questions in northwest England.
Simpson's research focuses on how abstract ideas become concrete realities, examining both material infrastructures and political ideologies. His ethnographic work addresses fundamental questions about how societies are engineered to believe certain things, dislike particular groups, and vote in specific ways. He collaborates with artists and filmmakers to present research as a public good, reflecting his commitment to humanities and social sciences in public life.
Professor Simpson has written three monographs, edited four essay collections, and authored over forty peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. He has been centrally involved in producing five anthropological films and two major exhibitions. In the last fifteen years, he has secured approximately £3 million in research funding and successfully supervised 15 PhD students to completion.
His recent scholarly output demonstrates an interdisciplinary approach connecting infrastructure studies with social and environmental concerns. Current projects include the Morecambe Bay Curriculum Theory of Change and Strategy Development (2023-2024), reflecting his commitment to regional partnerships and practical applications of academic work.
