Edward Shannon is a Professor of Literature at Ramapo College of New Jersey, where he has been teaching since 1997. He is affiliated with the School of Humanities and Global Studies and the Department of English & Literary Studies. His office is located in room B-207, and he holds office hours on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00-9:30 am and 2:00-3:00 pm.
Professor Shannon received his academic degrees from:
- B.A. from Ramapo College of New Jersey
- M.A. from North Carolina State University
- Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro
His teaching and research focus primarily on American literature, with particular emphasis on twentieth century fiction. Professor Shannon's scholarly work bridges traditional literary studies with popular culture, exploring the intersections between canonical literature and comic books, folk music, and detective fiction. His unique approach examines how American cultural identity is reflected and shaped through these diverse forms of expression.
Professor Shannon has developed a distinctive scholarly trajectory that spans multiple disciplines. He has made significant contributions to Mark Twain studies, comic book scholarship, and the analysis of American folk traditions. Professor Shannon teaches a wide range of courses including Contemporary American Literature, Comic American Novel, 20th Century American Novel, Survey of American Literature I & II, and Major Authors: Mark Twain for the Literature major. For the American Studies program, he offers American Crime Fiction and Film and Comics and American Culture. He also contributes to the MALS Graduate Program with courses on American Gothic literature and American Folk traditions.
