Professor Jones' research focuses on development economics with particular emphasis on Sub-Saharan Africa, especially Mozambique and Lusophone Africa. His work spans foreign aid effectiveness, education quality, labor markets, poverty analysis, and economic growth. He combines extensive field experience—including seven years advising the Mozambican government—with rigorous empirical analysis of macro- and micro-economic data from developing countries.
His publication record shows consistent research output since 2007, with recent work (including two 2025 publications) examining agricultural development in Mozambique and political-business connections. His research demonstrates methodological diversity, employing both quantitative and qualitative approaches to address development challenges.
Professor Jones has significant professional experience beyond academia, including senior advisory roles with the Mozambican government and research positions with the Danish Institute for International Studies. His work has garnered substantial academic attention, with multiple publications receiving hundreds of citations and policy references.
He currently teaches a Master's course on applied macroeconomic and policy analysis in developing countries, building on his extensive field experience in Africa, Asia, and other developing regions. His teaching portfolio previously included courses on African economics and foreign aid.
