Dr. Edward James Brash is a Professor in the Department of Physics at Christopher Newport University's School of Engineering and Computing, where he has been a faculty member since 2004. He holds a joint staff scientist appointment at Jefferson Laboratory (JLab) and serves as an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow's Department of Physics & Astronomy. Brash leads experimental nuclear and particle physics research programs at JLab, supervising graduate and undergraduate students on diverse subatomic physics projects.
- Ph.D. in Physics from Simon Fraser University
- MS in Physics from Queen's University
- BS in Engineering Physics from Queen's University
Brash's research focuses on nucleon structure, hypernuclear spectroscopy, and quantum chromodynamics (QCD), with over 100 publications in top physics journals. He has developed innovative courses in experiment design, computational physics, and high-speed data acquisition systems, integrating real-world JLab research examples. His work includes precision measurements of proton form factors, studies of color transparency, and detector design for the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) through the ECCE collaboration.
Recent publications highlight his contributions to flavor-dependent fragmentation functions, TMD measurements, and lepton flavor violation studies at the EIC. Brash has been honored for his scholarship through invitations to publish review papers in the European Journal of Physics and maintain active international collaborations, particularly with the University of Glasgow. His research program bridges fundamental physics investigations with hands-on student training in cutting-edge experimental techniques.
- Honorary Senior Research Fellow, University of Glasgow
Brash supervises numerous students in experimental nuclear physics projects at JLab and has led international study programs, including a 2016 semester abroad at the University of Glasgow. He has contributed to detector development and performance simulations for the ECCE experiment at the EIC, while maintaining active involvement in virtual Compton scattering studies and nucleon electromagnetic form factor research.
