Edward Jaenicke

Edward Jaenicke is a Professor of Agricultural Economics in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Pennsylvania State University, affiliated with the Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology and Education. He teaches undergraduate courses in Agribusiness Management (AGBM) and graduate courses in the Energy, Environmental, and Food Economics (EEFE) program, including AGBM 170N: Exploring the U.S. Food System and AGBM 430: U.S. Food and Agricultural Policy.

His research focuses on three primary domains:

• Pricing/marketing strategies in food manufacturing and retail sectors
• Household food purchasing behavior and its relationship to health outcomes
• Impact of food environments on dietary quality, with specialized expertise in organic agriculture and food waste economics

He extensively utilizes micro-level consumer scanner data to analyze purchasing patterns.

Recent publications demonstrate strong research trends in food policy impacts (e.g., trans fat bans, SNAP effects), crisis response (COVID-19 dietary shifts), and sustainable consumption (food waste reduction, organic/local systems). His work frequently appears in top agricultural economics journals including Agricultural Economics, Food Policy, and Agribusiness.

Professor Jaenicke holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Natural Resource Economics from the University of Maryland (1997) and a B.A. in Economics from Wesleyan University (1984). He currently advises PhD students in the EEFE program and maintains active collaborations with health economists and consumer behavior researchers.
