Edward J. Andrews

Edward J. Andrews is a faculty member at the School of Communication and Arts, Universidad Nebrija, specializing in Sculpture. He is an active artist and researcher, affiliated with the ETCC Nebrija Research Group on Transversal Studies in Contemporary Creation. He earned his doctorate in 2024 from Universidad Complutense de Madrid with a thesis on liminality.

His educational background includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts (2010-2014) and a Master’s in Art and Creation Research (2014-2015) from Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and earlier studies in Mathematics at the College of Charleston, USA (1982-1984).

Andrews' research and artistic practice are deeply rooted in conceptual and installation art, exploring the liminal spaces between art, philosophy, and society. His work investigates themes of surveillance, institutional critique, quantum theory, memory, and the meta-modern condition—an oscillation between irony and sincerity. He employs diverse media including sculpture, performance, intervention, and digital technology to challenge perceptions of space, authority, and the observer's role.

His artistic output demonstrates a consistent engagement with theoretical frameworks, particularly meta-modernism, as seen in projects like A real difference and I like to think that the moon is there.... These works often involve physical interventions in galleries or public spaces, blurring the lines between improvement, vandalism, and philosophical inquiry. Recurring motifs include the white cube gallery, domestic spaces, and the body as a site of political and existential tension.

He has presented his work in numerous solo and collective exhibitions across Spain and the USA, including venues like the Museo Sefardí in Toledo, Galería L21 in Madrid, and the University of the West of England in Bristol.

Andrews has contributed to academic research through participation in groups such as 'En los márgenes del arte' and 'La escuelita' at CA2M. His projects often involve community or institutional engagement, such as his improvement of a library book at the Faculty of Fine Arts. He has also delivered lectures on topics like 'Post-truth' and 'Turistificación' in Madrid.
