Edward E. Baptist is a Professor at Cornell University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences and the departments of American Studies Program and History. His scholarly work centers on the history of the 19th-century United States, particularly the expansion of slavery in the South and its profound economic, political, and cultural consequences for American society and the modern world.
Baptist’s research explores the experiences of enslaved individuals through systems of forced migration and labor, with a focus on how slavery shaped capitalism, gender roles, and cultural narratives. He is currently authoring a book that synthesizes these themes, examining the interplay between slavery’s expansion and the development of contemporary global structures. His work also aligns with Cornell’s History of Capitalism initiative, an interdisciplinary effort to analyze capitalism’s large-scale evolution.
