University of Southern Californiaمعرفی
Edward David Crandall, PhD, MD is a Professor of Pathology and holds the Hasting Foundation Professorship in Medicine at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine. He serves as Director of the Will Rogers Institute Pulmonary Research Center, where his research focuses on alveolar epithelial cell development, pulmonary injury recovery mechanisms, and nanoparticle interactions with lung tissues.
Dr. Crandall's research interests span multiple critical areas of pulmonary medicine including alveolar epithelial cell development and differentiation, acute and chronic lung injury recovery mechanisms, transport properties of pulmonary alveolar epithelium, and the biology of nanoparticle interactions with alveolar epithelial cells. His work integrates chemical engineering principles with medical research to address fundamental questions about lung physiology and pathology.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on autophagy mechanisms in lung cells, nanoparticle interactions with pulmonary tissues, and molecular regulation of alveolar cell development. The research shows increasing sophistication in cellular imaging techniques, mathematical modeling of biological processes, and exploration of molecular pathways involved in lung development and disease.

Dr. Crandall received his B.Ch.E. from Cooper Union, followed by M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering from Northwestern University. He earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and completed clinical training in internal medicine and pulmonary/critical care medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. This unique combination of engineering and medical training has positioned him to make significant contributions to understanding the biophysical properties of lung tissue.
As Director of the Will Rogers Institute Pulmonary Research Center, Dr. Crandall leads a research program that investigates fundamental mechanisms of lung development, injury, and repair. His laboratory has developed sophisticated models for studying alveolar epithelial cell function, including primary cell cultures and animal models that have advanced understanding of pulmonary physiology.
