Edward Brown III is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Neuroscience at the University of Rochester, affiliated with the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences and the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center. He holds a PhD from Cornell University and completed postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School. His research focuses on tumor metastasis mechanisms and novel optical imaging techniques, particularly multiphoton microscopy and second harmonic generation (SHG) imaging.
Dr. Brown's educational background includes a BS in Physics (Wake Forest University) and a PhD in Physics (Cornell University). His postdoctoral work at Massachusetts General Hospital expanded his expertise in radiation oncology and biomedical imaging.
His research interests center on tumor biology, with emphasis on extracellular matrix dynamics, neuronal influences on cancer progression, and stress signaling pathways. Key innovations include pioneering multiphoton fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP), applying MPLSM to tumor biology, and developing SHG directionality analysis for metastatic prediction.
His work demonstrates how SHG directionality at tumor-host interfaces provides superior prognostic value when combined with genomic data. Over 20 years of research has produced foundational techniques in biophotonics and cancer imaging.
