Edward Anderson is an academic specializing in modern and contemporary Indian and British history, particularly focusing on the Indian diaspora, transnational politics, Hindu nationalism, and multiculturalism. Currently serving as Academic Lead for the North East Museums-Northumbria University Cultural Partnership and Senior Fellow at SOAS, University of London (from 2025), he joined Northumbria University in 2020. Previously, he held positions as Smuts Research Fellow in Commonwealth Studies at the University of Cambridge (2015-19) and postdoctoral roles at LMU Munich and visiting fellowships at institutions like the London School of Economics.
His teaching includes undergraduate modules on 'Britain's History of Immigration, Multiculturalism and Race' and 'Modern India', as well as an MA module on 'Britain's Empires: Imperialism & Resistance in the Modern World'. He co-founded the North East South Asia Network (NESAN) in 2023 and serves as External Examiner for the Modern South Asia programmes at the University of Oxford.
Research interests span anti-colonial resistance, educational migration in Western Europe (1960s–1980s), and the intersection of diaspora communities with national and global political dynamics. His recent work explores the evolving strategies of Hindu nationalist movements and their transnational impact. Key publications include analyses of UK-India relations, diaspora politics, and the cultural dimensions of Hindu nationalism.
