Edward Alden is a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), specializing in U.S. economic competitiveness, trade, and immigration policy. He holds visiting academic positions at Western Washington University as the Ross Distinguished Visiting Professor and is affiliated with the Washington Campus as faculty. He also serves on the advisory council of the Clayton Yeutter Institute of International Trade at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

His recent publications and commentary focus on the instability of U.S. trade policy, the human costs of restrictive border regimes, and the erosion of multilateral trade norms. He frequently analyzes the economic implications of protectionist policies and the strategic use of tariffs in foreign policy.
