Edo Kussell is a Professor of Biology and Physics at New York University, affiliated with both the Department of Biology and the Physics Department within the Faculty of Arts & Science. He is based at the Center for Genomics and Systems Biology at 12 Waverly Place, Room 206, New York, NY 10003.
Dr. Kussell received his academic training at:
- Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard University
His research focuses on computational biology, evolution, and biological physics, with particular emphasis on bacterial persistence mechanisms, evolutionary dynamics in fluctuating environments, and protein folding. Kussell investigates how microorganisms employ stochasticity to their advantage, distinguishing adaptive stochasticity from useless noise, and studying how sensing mechanisms evolve. His work combines theoretical and computational modeling with comparative genomics to understand bacterial population dynamics.
Dr. Kussell's publications reveal a strong focus on evolutionary dynamics, bacterial adaptation, and computational approaches to biological problems. His recent work explores evolvability, cell size control, ecological memory in phage resistance, and nonlinear reaction networks. The research spans theoretical biophysics, microbiology, and evolutionary biology, often applying information theory to biological questions.
Dr. Kussell leads the Quantitative Microbiology and Evolutionary Dynamics Lab, which works on projects at the intersection of bacterial physiology and evolutionary dynamics. The lab develops novel biophysics methods to address problems relevant to the emergence of antibiotic resistance, adaptation to fluctuating environments, host-pathogen dynamics, and bacterial recombination.
