Edmund Keogh is Professor of Psychology and Deputy Head of Department (Research and Knowledge Exchange) at the University of Bath, where he also serves as Deputy Director of The Bath Centre for Pain Research. His academic career focuses on understanding the psychological aspects of pain, with particular emphasis on how sex and gender differences influence pain experiences and expressions.
Professor Keogh's research spans several key areas within pain psychology, primarily examining psychosocial mechanisms such as emotions and coping strategies in pain perception. He has developed specialized expertise in sex and gender differences in pain, particularly in nonverbal communication of pain expressions. Another significant research strand investigates how pain disrupts attention and performance, and the cognitive biases present in individuals with fear of pain. His work demonstrates strong methodological rigor with both laboratory and clinical applications.
His research portfolio includes seven major projects, with two currently active and five recently completed. Notable projects include work with the UK Biobank examining high impact chronic pain and transitions in pain states, funded by the Medical Research Council. He has also secured funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council for innovative work on remote mobile technology for ecological assessment. His research contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and wellbeing.
Professor Keogh is actively involved in doctoral supervision, welcoming students interested in sex and gender differences in experimental pain, nonverbal pain communication, and attentional aspects of pain.
