Edmund J. Goehring is a Professor of Music History at Western University within the Don Wright Faculty of Music. He holds a PhD from Columbia University and specializes in aesthetics, historiography, and criticism, with a focus on theatre and opera during the time of Mozart.
Goehring’s research spans disciplines such as Musicology, Eighteenth-Century Music, and Opera Studies. His notable work includes the book Coming to Terms with Our Musical Past (2018), which critiques modernist approaches to Mozart’s compositions and won the 2019 Marjorie Weston Emerson Award.
His scholarly contributions have been recognized through fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Goehring also teaches graduate seminars on topics like the concept of genius in music historiography, Mozart and modernity, and allegory in European theatre.
