Edith Hillan is a Professor at the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto, where she has served since 2001. She previously held a Personal Chair in Midwifery at the University of Glasgow (UK) and served as Associate Dean (2002-2004) and Vice-Provost (2004-2014) at U of T in academic personnel roles. Her work bridges clinical practice, research, and education, with a focus on global maternal and neonatal health.

Her research interests center on technologies to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes in rural/remote settings, including:
- Low-cost 'Clinic-in-a-Box' for emergency obstetric care
- Point-of-Care assays for lab-quality diagnostics in field settings
- Field-based education programs to reduce birth complications
- Intersectional analysis of maternal cardiovascular risks among African/Caribbean/Black women

- Developmentally supportive care for preterm infants in LMICs
