معرفی
Rice University Professor Edison Liang is the Andrew Hays Buchanan Professor of Astrophysics and a faculty affiliate of the Rice Space Institute. Holding a joint appointment in the Department of Physics & Astronomy, he has pioneered research in relativistic plasma physics, high energy density physics, and high-energy astrophysics, with applications to antimatter creation and laser-plasma interactions.
- Education: BA (1967) and PhD (1971) in Physics from UC Berkeley
- Academic Career: Assistant Professor at Michigan State and Stanford, followed by leadership roles at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory before joining Rice in 1991
His research focuses on relativistic plasma dynamics and computational fluid dynamics, with experimental and theoretical projects involving laser-plasma interactions and high energy density laboratory astrophysics. Over 300 publications in refereed journals reflect his contributions to cosmology, plasma physics, and nuclear fusion.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Fellow of the American Physical Society
- British SRC Senior Visiting Scientist Fellowship
- University of California Science Fellowship
- Anthony Scholarship
Current advisees include graduate students Kyle Perez and Brandon Cage, with recent PhD graduates Guy Hilburn (2012), Alexander Henderson (2015), Tilak Dhakal (2017), and Yingchao Lu (2020). He leads the Plasma Group at Rice and has co-organized the High Energy Density Laboratory Astrophysics conference series.
