Edgar Hertwich

Edgar Hertwich is a Professor in Industrial Ecology at NTNU's Department of Energy and Process Engineering, though currently on leave. He holds a part-time role as a Principal Research Scholar at IIASA (Austria). He has been recognized with NTNU's 2023 research excellence award and is among the world's top 100 environmental scientists. His work focuses on climate mitigation, resource efficiency, and sustainable development. Hertwich has contributed to major reports like the IPCC 5th Assessment and the EU Circular Economy Action Plan. He has held leadership roles at NTNU, Yale, and the International Society for Industrial Ecology. His research employs life-cycle assessment and input-output economics.

Key achievements include coordinating the UN's International Resource Panel report on resource efficiency and climate change, advising the EU's climate strategy, and co-founding XIO Sustainability Analytics. He has also engaged in global policy initiatives, including the Global Energy Assessment and pandemic preparedness efforts.

Scientific contributions span over 200 peer-reviewed papers, with recent work addressing CO2 removal strategies, circular economy modeling, and the energy supply crisis post-Ukraine invasion. His awards include fellowships and advisory roles in prominent institutions.
