Dr. Ed Pickering serves as Reader (equivalent to Associate Professor) in the Department of Materials at the University of Manchester since 2023, following promotions from Senior Lecturer (2019) and initial Lecturer appointment (2015). He concurrently holds the strategic position of Research Area Lead for Advanced Metals Processing at the Henry Royce Institute.
Research Focus: His work centers on phase transformations and microstructural engineering of advanced alloys—including steels, high-entropy alloys, and refractory systems—with critical applications in nuclear fission/fusion energy and aerospace. A unifying theme involves optimizing manufacturing processes to simultaneously enhance component performance, reduce material waste, and extend service life for environmental sustainability.
Scientific Recognition:
- Frank Fitzgerald Medal (2017) from Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining
- Grunfeld Memorial Medal (2021)
Industrial Engagement: Maintains active partnerships with major industry leaders:
- Rolls-Royce plc (aerospace materials)
- UK Atomic Energy Authority (nuclear fusion)
- Airbus (aerospace components)
- EDF Energy (nuclear fission)
- Sheffield Forgemasters (metal forging)
As a governing board member for two Centres for Doctoral Training (Advanced Metallics System and Fusion), he plays a pivotal role in national PhD training. His research group at Manchester bridges fundamental metallurgy with industrial-scale materials processing challenges.
