Ed Johnston is an Associate Professor in Criminal Justice & Procedure at the University of Northampton's Faculty of Business and Law. His research focuses on criminal justice systems, procedural fairness, and the role of the defence lawyer, particularly in relation to evidence disclosure and suspects' rights. He completed his PhD in 2018, titled 'The Defence Lawyer in the Modern Era,' which examined the evolving role of defence advocates in adversarial systems. Ed serves as an external examiner at Keele University and edits the Routledge series Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice and Procedure.

Research interests include adversarialism, fair trial rights, pre-trial disclosure mechanisms, and the impact of managerialism on defence rights. His work frequently addresses systemic challenges in criminal justice processes, such as procedural fairness in online courts and comparative pre-trial procedures across jurisdictions.
Key conference presentations include discussions at the Law and Society Annual Conference (2021), the Legal Policy Research Center's Kazakhstan forum (2020), and the Society for Legal Scholars Annual Conferences (2018–2016). He has secured research grants, including £1,125 from the Society of Legal Scholars (2021) for a study on pre-charge engagement and £1,500 from the Socio Legal Studies Association (2019) for a seminar on disclosure challenges.
