Eckart Conze

Prof. Dr. Eckart Conze is a Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the Philipps University of Marburg, heading the Chair of Modern History (Seminar für Neuere Geschichte). Since 2024, he serves as Dean of the Faculty of History and Cultural Studies (Fb06). His academic career includes visiting professorships at institutions like the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Utrecht University, and the University of Toronto. He specializes in German, European, and international history from the 19th to 21st centuries, with a focus on historical security studies, nuclear age history, and the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. His research also addresses topics like the Nazi era, post-war diplomacy, and the European integration process.

Key roles include leading the Independent Historians' Commission on the History of the German Foreign Office during the Nazi era and early Federal Republic (2005–2010), directing the International Research and Documentation Center for War Crimes Trials (ICWC), and co-editing journals like Zeithistorische Forschungen. He is a Vice President of the Commission for the History of International Relations (CHIR) and holds leadership roles in multiple academic societies and research networks.

His research interests span historical security studies, nuclear age history, the history of international law (especially genocide conventions), and memory studies related to Nazi Germany and its aftermath. Publications include Die Suche nach Sicherheit (2009), analyzing post-war German security policy, and Historische Sicherheitsforschung (2017), exploring historical approaches to security.

Prof. Conze's awards include the Opus Magnum Grant for Humanities (2007) and the Börsenverein Translation Prize (2009). He advises doctoral students and actively engages in public history initiatives, including media contributions and policy consultations.
